When the war broke out in mid-July, 2006, the Chettis were faced with the decision to stay in Beirut or to leave. After seeking guidance through prayer, the Chettis made the decision to remain in Lebanon despite bombs being dropped very close to where they were staying. While there, the Chettis were able to help the people in the area, receiving and distributing food and supplies for civilians and Lebanese natives.

Kristy Engel Profile

"I find incredible joy and fulfillment in working with children," says Kristy Engel, who uses her skills in nursing and education in medical ministry in the Dominican Republic.

Spending time as a mission volunteer in Haiti helped Kristy to realize that God was calling her into medical mission. After completing nursing school, she returned to Haiti and worked in pediatrics at Good Samaritan Hospital in Limbé for eighteen months. Now she works with the Good Samaritan Hospital in La Romana, Dominican Republic, ministering to Haitians who are among the poorest in the country. She travels daily to batey (work camp) villages and barrios providing medical attention where so many have been unwilling or unable to offer these services. "I also work with my dog, Kobe, to teach children proper hygiene by brushing his teeth, bathing him and brushing his coat," she says. "Most of the children know my dog’s name better than my own!"

Kristy believes few people enter the field of medical ministry because of perceived hardship and often-volatile work environments. "Unfortunately, this means that many people around the world will suffer and die due to lack of medical treatment," she says. "I have found that God has given me a greater sense of His purpose through nursing on the mission field."

Kristy also leads many American work teams that minister to the needs in the Dominican Republic.

Nora and Pieter Kalkman Profile

In the early 1990’s, the opening of former Eastern Block countries in Europe provided numerous opportunities to help and encourage struggling churches and Christian organizations in those areas. Today, travel and communication options are changing the world into a global community. These combined factors have led to a greater interest from individuals and churches to be directly involved in ministry and mission in Europe.

Nora and Pieter cultivate and nourish this growing interest by coordinating the skills and interests of volunteers from the United States and Puerto Rico with the needs of the more than 50 Baptist unions that are a part of the European Baptist Federation. Facilitating the volunteers and volunteer groups is an important ministry in developing relationships and doing Christian witness across national boundaries.

Nora and Pieter returned from home assignment in 2006 to their residence in Prague, Czech Republic, which they use as home base. From Prague, they travel extensively, meeting with partners throughout Europe, Middle East and West Asia to identify needs and to coordinate opportunities for American Baptist churches and individuals to engage in mission in the region.
